Trombone glissando: a case study in continuity and change in brass instrument performance idioms
نویسنده
چکیده
The demand for trombone-players, for what are called ‘jazz’ bands, has not only made it difficult to keep them in symphony orchestras, but it is destroying their artistic efficiency. The principal characteristic of ‘jazz’ music is the vulgar sliding from tone to tone.... This plays havoc with the embouchure of the musician, and, if persisted in, inevitably unfits him for artistic music.... It is enough to point out that the need of a correct and sensitive embouchure is ... essential. Literary Digest, 12 June 1920.

Open areas of vibrating lips in trombone playing
In brass instruments the player’s lips are used as a control valve that allows an oscillating flow of air into the instrument. The behaviour of this valve, the lip-reed, is determined by both the pressure difference across the lips and the open area between the lips. Computer simulations of brass instrument playing frequently represent the lips as an oscillating system with one degree of freedo...
متن کاملPhysiology and prospects of bimanual tracheoesophageal brass instrument play
This study investigated whether trachea pressures during brass instrument play of laryngectomised patients are within the range of those measured during tracheoesophageal voicing, and whether application of an automatic speaking valve can 'free' both hands to play a brass instrument. Objective assessment of voicing and music playing parameters was carried out in 2 laryngectomised patients with ...
متن کاملA stroboscopic study of lip vibrations in a trombone
The purpose of the present study was to obtain detailed photographic sequences and lip motion data on which lip models for brass instruments may be more accurately based. The study expands upon an earlier study by Martin @J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 13, 305–307 ~1942!# by using advanced fiber-optic stroboscopy, a real instrument mouthpiece, and by studying two dynamic levels. The trombone was selected ...
متن کاملAn active mute for the trombone.
A mute is a device that is placed in the bell of a brass instrument to alter its sound. However, when a straight mute is used with a brass instrument, the frequencies of its first impedance peaks are slightly modified, and a mistuned, extra impedance peak appears. This peak affects the instrument's playability, making some lower notes difficult or impossible to produce when playing at low dynam...
متن کاملArchitectural Acoustics: Integration of Synthesis Techniques and ‘‘Acoustical’’ Music
The real time use of signal processing for brass instrument performance ~specifically the trombone! provides an opportunity, as well as challenges, to create a type of hyper-instrument quite unlike most conceptions of the term. These include the expansion of the available sound palette, the problem of real time parameter control, microphone techniques, and repertoire considerations. The various...
